IDEA of the Month – Beyond Rainbows: Three Messages that Matter this Pride

A person with backing our view. They are holding the progress Pride flag above their head in both hands. The flag is fluttering in the wind.

June is Pride Month in Toronto. Amidst the rainbows, corporate floats, and parties, Pride invites us to dig deeper and elevate real calls to action from 2SLGBTQ+ communities. Dean Lobo, VP (IDEA) of IABC/Toronto, shares three considerations for your Pride communications:

  1. We owe Pride to trans people: Pride was born out of the courage of Black and racialized trans women who resisted police violence at Stonewall and beyond. Honour this legacy by centering trans voices in your campaigns, donating to trans-led organizations, and shutting down anti-trans hate.
  2. 2SLGBTQ+ communities are not a monolith: The 2SLGBTQ+ umbrella includes a wide range of identities shaped by race, class, ability, immigration status, age, and more. Ensure you reflect this diversity and address the experiences and needs of those most marginalized within 2SLGBTQ+ communities.
  3. Pride as is a year-round commitment: Pride goes beyond “love is love”; it’s a reminder of ongoing struggles for safety, rights, and dignity. Commit to active allyship year-round. Include 2SLGBTQ+ voices in your communication, hire 2SLGBTQ+ people, and foster inclusive workplaces.
