As a Muslim communicator, Ramadan at work can be beautiful, and occasionally awkward. One must often navigate odd questions or show up to meetings when it’s time to break fast. Inclusion doesn’t have to be complicated. IDEA committee member Zaina Meher Kadiri shares some tips to be thoughtful to those observing Ramadan:
- Lead with support, not curiosity: “How can we make this month easier?” lands better than “So…not even water?”
- Be mindful of timing: If you’re planning meetings or events, avoid sunset (iftar), when many Muslims break their fast.
- Do not assume every Muslim is fasting: Some might choose not to for various reasons. Avoid asking why.
It’s important to match words with action. A “Ramadan Mubarak” or “Ramadan Kareem” post is lovely, but real inclusion looks like being flexible and understanding. Click here for more tips.
