Tanya Murali Dharan is an experienced communication professional passionate about building and executing effective communication strategies. Tanya is a York University (Toronto) student pursuing her post-graduate public relations certificate.
Tanya’s passion for communications and event planning began as a child when she volunteered for her church in New Delhi. That experience sparked a deep interest in mass communication that propelled Tanya to complete a bachelor’s degree in Journalism & Mass Communication from IP University in New Delhi, India.
Tanya’s first post-baccalaureate position was at Nninjas Model Management in New Delhi, India. Starting as an intern, Tanya worked her way up the corporate ladder to become the communications director, managing and leading a team of 20 staff to increase stakeholder engagement. Then, Tanya transitioned to Touchwood Entertainment Ltd, a renowned event management company.
As an event coordinator, Tanya found her responsibilities pulling her toward communication, culminating in her enrollment at York University’s certificate program in public relations. As a Touchwood event coordinator, Tanya grew its customer base by creating strategic networking events. As a student looking for opportunities to increase her exposure to the communications business, Tanya connected to IABC/Toronto.
Tanya is quick to point out that IABC membership allows its members to connect with a supportive community of communication professionals who possess varying levels of expertise in a multitude of communication roles. Members gain valuable insights and skills through professional development and contribute to meaningful volunteer work. Furthermore, endless new challenges allow one to grow and develop as a communication professional. Tanya shares, “If you want to invest in your career and personal growth, become an IABC/Toronto member today.”
Tanya is firm in her belief that effective communication is essential for the success of any organization. Messaging is the backbone of an organization. Messaging done well unifies employees towards a common goal. Without clear and consistent communication, an organization and its employees often paddle in opposing directions because goals aren’t clear.
As for the future of communication, brands will have to adapt to the evolving media landscape, including technological advances, society’s needs for messaging across various channels, and new business challenges.
In the coming years, Tanya expects continued growth in digital communication channels, artificial intelligence and data analytics, and an increased emphasis on personalized engagement with target audiences – print variable data management. As technology advances, companies will need to ensure their messaging is ethical and communications are transparent to build and maintain trust with their stakeholders. Likewise, communicators must be adaptable and innovative to meet the ever-changing needs of their audiences.
Tanya is super excited about the home she found at IABC/Toronto, an inclusive, supportive, and warm environment that provides a sense of belonging to a community. For her, the association provides a meeting ground for networking and making valuable and long-lasting connections with diverse communicators. It offers volunteer opportunities where members can use their competencies to move forward IABC/Toronto’s agenda. Numerous opportunities exist for mentoring by communication pros and workshops for continuous learning and professional development.
