Some of you may be seasoned pros at attending conferences and networking events, but for those who don’t, it can be pretty stressful to think about how to make the best out of this double header event! From choosing an outfit that will be comfortable but professional, to learning how to break the ice when networking with the who’s who in the comms industry – these are all things that are normal to be worried about, but hopefully this blog will ease some of those worries!
This year’s event dress code is “spring business casual”, striking the perfect balance between comfortable and professional.
After the “fit check” passes the “vibe check”, how does one take full advantage of the day and shine in front of an amazing network full of comms professionals, OVATION winners and potential employers? What does one wear when accepting an award on stage?
Here are some suggestions:
Dressing for success (and stylish comfort)
Start off by asking yourself this question: “what would I wear to an interview?” – that’s a great place to start, and if you already have an outfit in mind, building on it is easy! If you don’t, here are some suggestions:
Shirts and blouses
A crisp shirt or a lightweight blouse is the perfect foundation for your business casual look. Roll up those sleeves for a casual vibe or tuck in that shirt for a more tailored finish.
Blazers or sport coat
A classic blazer is the pinnacle of business casual attire. A nice clean shirt or blouse underneath with your choice of pants or skirts will do just fine! For a more laid-back vibe, opt for a lightweight fabric and team it with some clean sneakers. Of course, rocking a blazer with a pair of well-fitted jeans gives a modern twist!
Accessories
Accessory choices are personal preference, but necklaces, rings, watches and event a belt can complete a look that suits your personal brand!
Footwear
Always remember that the right footwear can also complete your look. Choose closed-toe shoes for a professional look like loafers, oxfords, flats, or low heels for all genders. A clean pair of sneakers can also make sure that you’re comfortable throughout the day!
Networking 101
Meeting new people can always be a little stressful. For those social butterflies, it may be easy to network, but it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Here are a few things to consider when looking to meet new people and start conversations:
Introduce yourself to an IABC Board Member – let them make the intros!
We love meeting comms professionals at all stages of their careers. The IABC board likely knows someone they can introduce you to at the event. They are a good starting point to shake the jitters off before expanding to other attendees. These board members will be easy to find, probably because we are eager to meet you and say hello first!
There will be volunteers throughout the event that you can also network with as they are part of the IABC chapter.
Say hi to the person next to you between speaking sessions.
The career expo will give you lots of opportunities to connect with other attendees, and if you happen to sit beside someone you don’t know, a simple “hello, I’m ____” can spark a new network connection!
Some questions you can ask them are:
“How did you find out about this event?”
“What has been your favourite part so far?”
“What are you looking forward to today?”
An easy way to introduce yourself during the OVATION Awards is to find someone who is holding their award, or to congratulate them if you hear that their has won an Award of Distinction.
Get ready to share your LinkedIn profiles or business cards
Once you make the connection, a simple LinkedIn request will tee you up for discussion after the event! If you are someone who has business cards, have a few on hand to hand out.
The most important tip might sound cliché, but the best way to attract those like-minded individuals, is to allow your most authentic self to shine and enjoy the event for all it has to offer. You’ll grow and learn from an inspiring professional community, gain confidence and some new connections. Most of all, you’ll be proud that you’re a part of the amazing IABC Toronto community, dedicated to helping you #FindYourPossible.
