Sr. Advisor, Marketing & Communications, City of Markham
You know, it’s really funny how things work out sometimes. When I graduated from university in our nation’s capital over a decade ago, I set my sights on Downtown Toronto because I didn’t want to work for the government (or so I thought…).
Upon arrival, I found myself at the doorstep of the City of Markham (my hometown) and have basically been working for their corporate communications department ever since.
Working for one of Canada’s most diverse communities and the nation’s high-tech capital has presented me with some very exciting and challenging opportunities as a communications professional.
It has allowed me to work on large-scale, innovative and high-impact initiatives and events that connect communities and have a real influence on people’s lives.
Working for an organization that is known as a leader in digital democracy, I have been able to lead the communications for its online voting program – resulting in numerous record-breaking results, and of course, tons of lessons learned. Most recently, I have had the opportunity to lead communications as Public Information Officer for the City’s Emergency Operations Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Giving back to my community and to my profession is at my core. And to that note, I am excited and extremely humbled to be on the 2020/2021 IABC/Toronto Proposed Slate of Board nominees for Vice President, OVATION Awards. I look forward to helping our creative community of communication pros celebrate excellence in communications in the year to come and to meeting many of you at upcoming IABC/Toronto events either virtually or in person.
