IABC/Toronto is pleased to announce the launch of the Student Communicators Circle (SCC), an innovative approach to building stronger relationships with our student members. The SCC will support students and recent graduates as they embark on their professional communications careers.
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted student employment opportunities, making this launch timely. According to a Labour Force Study conducted by Statistics Canada in May 2020, the employment rate for postsecondary students aged 20 to 24 plummeted to 29.8 per cent in April, down from 52.5 per cent in February. For students who initially reported they had a job lined up after graduation, 31 per cent ended up losing their placement and 40 per cent had their job start date delayed. Only 13 per cent said their job was still in place.
The SCC will run focus group discussions to explore student needs and provide student members with valuable professional development, leadership and networking opportunities, as well as community support.
Further information about the SCC will be shared in the coming weeks, but please feel free to reach out to toronto-sig@iabc.to for more information or to share your ideas on how we can make this initiative a success!
