From English Lit to PR: Arun Begins to Chart a Career Path
Arun is an early career professional and a recent graduate of Canadore College’s public relations (PR) program. He sees communications as a necessary part of every industry. Whether it is creating strategies for global or internal communications, relaying organizational change, or shoring up employee engagement, words, images, and media play an important role in keeping an organization’s brand dynamic and relevant. This is what prompted Arun to begin exploring opportunities in the field of communications as a literature student.
Arun is a newcomer to Canada and has already gathered valuable industry experience by developing plans and press releases, writing articles, and assisting with event organization whenever the opportunity has arisen. He has written for the City of Toronto while working with organizations like the Canada Nepal Community Foundation, and as part of his final project at Canadore, he explored how various PR strategies could have helped alleviate the impact of Covid-19 on Universal Studios.
Arun’s Journey with IABC/Toronto
Encouraged by his teachers, Arun was eager to join IABC. He attended a networking event where he connected with communication professionals and felt welcomed. In his own words, “I knew I was in the perfect place to gain hands-on experience in the industry.” Participating in the Mentorship Program, connected him with his mentor, Amy Silverwood. Arun continues to volunteer with IABC/TO and invests his time in learning and networking with leaders within the industry.
According to Arun, IABC is where all the best communicators are. Through networking opportunities, professional development events, access to resources, award celebrations, and volunteering, he keeps up with the evolving trends within the industry.
